Using Young’s Surreal with the Cat as inspiration, choose an animal and an object that are associated with Halloween (e.g., black cat and full moon, crow and broomstick). Sketch by drawing the two objects on paper and connecting them with varied lines. Fill the paper. Go over with black marker to create greater contrast.
Varied types of lines.

Using Young’s Brain Waves as inspiration, draw or photograph (and copy) your face and add details around the eyes and/or mouth and nose to create a mask for Halloween.
Using Halloween makeup, try and recreate your design directly to the face.
Using Young’s Surreal with the Cat and Eyecon as inspiration, discuss how black and white can be used to create light and dark. Talk about how when used in a certain way, the effect can draw the viewer’s eye to an intended object/focus point. Discuss how black and white can have a meaningful effect in artwork.
Create a cross with a poppy to commemorate Remembrance Day. Using the example provided, create the entire piece using black, white and grey.
Some information on Remembrance Day and significance of cross and poppy.
Create poems or sentences to go with their finished pieces.
IPad or camera for photography. Art app to play with light and dark (creating greater contrast and shadows). Paper/printer if desire to print out completed work.
Using Young’s Angelfish as inspiration, talk about the difference between the light and dark contrast within the fish. Discuss how everyday objects or people and animals can be made to look very different using black and white (high contrast of light and dark) photography. Using classroom IPad, have class choose their subject and take photo in colour. Go through process of turning to black and white and using Art apps, enhance the light and dark (e.g., Pixlemaker).
Note* this is a 1:1 assignment with the teacher for younger students.

Using Young’s Spirit of the Wolf, Dragon Feed, and Haida Fish as inspiration, create your own animal inspired glass stained artwork. Draw and cut out your chosen animal on black paper (outline only). Cut inside of paper away, leaving a thick, black frame/outline. Overlap and glue precut squares (varying sizes) of tissue paper. Make sure to “attach” to frame (glue on) when complete. Cut away any excess tissue paper. Attach string to hang if desired.
